I’m Hanna Kokko, MSW, LSWAIC, a grief therapist and certified death doula in Bellevue, Washington.

I’m drawn to work that asks us to stay present with what cannot simply be fixed: grief, dying, caregiving, uncertainty, and the practical realities that come with them.

My approach is warm, steady, and practical. Sometimes support means having space to talk. Sometimes it means help with a conversation, a plan, a vigil, or the next ordinary task when nothing feels ordinary anymore.

My Work With Grief and End-of-Life Care

My work brings together two related but distinct forms of support: grief therapy and end-of-life doula care. As a therapist, I work online with adults across Washington. As a doula, I offer non-medical support to people who are dying and the families around them, online and in person when available.

These roles are different, but they come from the same place: staying present with people during difficult, disorienting, and meaningful moments without rushing them or asking them to make the experience smaller than it is.

My Background

My connection to this work is both professional and personal. I lost both of my parents by the time I was 22, and that experience shaped my respect for how deeply grief can change a life.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington in Sociology and Psychology and a Master of Social Work from Seattle University. I am an LSWAIC in Washington State, with experience in hospital, hospice, private-practice, and grief-group settings.

I completed death doula training through Going With Grace and am a certified death doula.

My clinical and doula work are trauma-informed and grounded in respect for each person’s values, beliefs, relationships, and choices.

How I Approach This Work

I don’t believe grief has to look a certain way. You do not have to perform grief correctly or make your experience easier for other people to understand.

In therapy or doula work, I try to meet people where they are—whether that means talking, making room for complicated feelings, tending to practical needs, or simply being present.

My approach is warm, calm, practical, nonjudgmental, trauma-informed, and spiritually open without imposing any particular belief system.

Support That Is Both Emotional and Practical

Grief and end-of-life care often involve both the deeply emotional and the very ordinary.

There may be love, fear, silence, conflict, caregiving exhaustion, paperwork, meals, phone calls, visitors, and rooms that need tending. I’m comfortable with both parts.

Through The Heart was created to offer support that can stay with deep emotion while also helping with what needs attention next. My role is not to rush, fix, or take over, but to walk alongside you with steadiness and respect for what matters most to you.

A Note About Scope

Grief therapy is available by telehealth to adults across Washington. End-of-life doula support is non-medical and may be available online or in person, with in-person services in King County and the greater Puget Sound area.

I do not provide medical or legal advice, determine eligibility, guide medication use, or direct end-of-life decisions.

Reaching out can be simple. A free 30-minute consultation is a chance to share what’s happening, ask questions, and get a feel for whether working together seems like a good fit.
